GIA Clarity-Grading Scale
The GIA clarity grading scale specifies eleven grades. The
grades are assigned based on the relative visibility of characteristics
(inclusions or blemishes) in the diamond.
Fl, Flawless
Shows no inclusions or blemishes of any sort when observed by
an experienced grader under a 10X magnification.
IF, Internally Flawless
These stones show no inclusions and only insignificant
blemishes when examined by a skilled grader under 10X magnification.
VVS1 & VVS2, Very, very slightly included.
Contains minute inclusions that are difficult for even an
experienced grader to detect under a 10X magnification.
VS1 & VS2, Very slightly included
VS stones contain minute inclusions ranging from difficult
(VS1) to somewhat easy (VS2) for a trained grader to see under 10X
magnification. Typical inclusions are small included crystals or feathers,
distinct clouds, and groups of pinpoints. These do not affect the stone's
beauty.
SI1, SI2, & SI3 Slightly included
Contains noticeable inclusions which are easy (SI1) or very
easy (SI2 and SI3) for an experienced grader to see under 10X magnification.
I1 & I2 & I3, Included
These diamonds contain inclusions that are obvious under 10X
magnification, and can be seen face-up with the unaided eye, and may affect
transparency and brilliance. We do not carry any I3 diamonds.
Don't be concerned if the clarity of the diamond you choose is
not near the top the scale. Gems ranked near the top are extremely rare and
expensive.
